HANNIBAL â The Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce and Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council are teaming up to present the Northeast Workforce Summit, with strategies to combat a shortage of employees due to the pandemic.
McKenzie Disselhorst, executive director of the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce, said the Northeast Workforce Summit has taken place at the Mark Twain Museum, Hannibal-LaGrange University and Clover Road Christian Church during the past six or seven years. The summit was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and organizers wanted to make sure they could bring people together at a good time and in a slightly different format. The summit kicks off at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at the YâMenâs Pavilion.
HANNIBAL, Mo. â A proposal that would raise the city of Hannibalâs sales tax rate by one half cent will appear on the August 2021 ballot. If approved, revenue generated by the tax increase would be used solely for infrastructure improvements.
The ballot measure was brought before the Hannibal City Council during its Tuesday night meeting at city hall by Fourth Ward Councilman Alan Bowen.
âThe city has a long list of necessary infrastructure improvements that without adequate funding continues to deteriorate and grow,â he said.
Consideration was given to raising the cityâs property tax.
âThe cityâs property tax has not been increased since the 1970s. However, increasing this may hurt fixed-income citizens if the city chose to raise property taxes,â Bowen said. âIn my opinion, a low property tax gives incentive to build here as witnessed by many new subdivisions being built within the city.â
