The new cases take Sydney s outbreak to a total of 678 infections. There are currently 63 cases admitted to hospital, with 18 people in intensive care, four of whom require ventilation. There is now little hope that the Greater Sydney lockdown will end as planned at 11.59pm on July 16, with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian saying yesterday it was highly unlikely at this stage that restrictions will ease. Berejiklian said today the number of people out in the community while infectious needs to drop dramatically.

Coronavirus Australia: Sydney must adopt a Melbourne-style lockdown to beat Covid outbreak

Sydney needs to enforce tougher restrictions similar to the draconian lockdown in Melbourne a year ago to beat its latest coronavirus wave, experts have warned. Night curfews, five kilometre travel limits and a shutdown of non-essential retail could be introduced in Sydney and surrounding regions as the latest Covid-19 outbreak worsens. A host of new restrictions were announced before New South Wales recorded 112 new cases on Monday with 34 infectious in the community. There are growing calls from experts to ramp up restrictions similar to the draconian stage four lockdown in Melbourne a year ago which last for 112 days. Professor Mark Stoove, an epidemiologist from the government-funded Burnet Institute, doesn t believe the current lockdown measures in Sydney are sufficient and called for a necessary tightening of rules.
