Commemorative landscaped park planned for set-to-be-vacant Marines Hall lot in Tītahi Bay

Porirua City Council was granted resource consent to demolish the US Marines Hall, Tītahi Bay in February. The wrecking ball may be at the ready, but plans are afoot to replace the soon-to-be-vacant US Marines Hall site in Tītahi Bay with a commemorative park. A mural, lantern boxes and fruit trees are among the features being considered for the landscaped park, which must be built within a year of the wrecking ball striking the dilapidated structure. With an architect already engaged to bring the park proposal to life, Porirua Mayor Anita Baker is hopeful any plan will acknowledge the history of the site, and can be enjoyed by future generations.

Consent granted to demolish historic WWII Marines Hall

Commissioners have given their consent to demolish the historic Marines Hall in Tītahi Bay. “We want something to recognise the Marines history but also the fond memories that our community have of the hall – this would be appropriate and a good result.” The hall was built by American soldiers in 1942 and used as a recreational facility. Since the 1970s it was home to the Porirua Little Theatre. ROBERT KITCHIN/STUFF Theatre stalwart John Mahan and his late father Basil Mahan outside the hall.
