The mayor called the meeting after two of the measures failed to get extended when a single council member voted against them during their last regular meeting on Dec. 14. The other two measures were tabled. The measures need a supermajority to pass. If just two out of the seven council members vote against them, they'll be overturned.
Among the agenda items were how to jointly combat violence in Bethel, the transfer of city land to Tribal ownership, and creating a pedestrian path between the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation.
On Nov. 2, Bethel City Council and Orutsararmiut Native Council will meet together for the first time since August 2018. Among the agenda items are a proposed plan to transfer the land under the ONC Multipurpose Building back to the tribe, and a discussion on how the entities can better combat violence.
