A historic schoolhouse south of Portland, built more than 100 years ago, suffered “devastating” damage this week as ice and snow toppled large oak trees onto it.
The Mark Prairie Schoolhouse was built around 1900 south of Canby, according to the historical society that maintains the property. As a trio of powerful winter storms passed through the region over the weekend, layers of ice and snow collected on the trees around the building.
Eventually, the weight of the ice proved too much.
“The recent ice storm that hit Canby, Oregon has dealt a devastating blow to the Mark Prairie Schoolhouse and grounds,” the Mark Prairie Historical Society wrote on its website. “Several of the historic oak trees on the property were uprooted and unfortunately, a couple of the trees happened to fall on
Canby, Molalla projects receive county grants
Amplify Wait Park, Historic Molalla Log House both recipients of Clackamas County Cultural Coalition grants.
The Clackamas County Cultural Coalition awarded $39,000 in grants to 17 arts and culture organizations through its Project Grant program, including some projects in Canby and Molalla.
In all, $58,398 was requested by county grant applicants.
The grant program s purpose is to locally distribute private funds contributed to the Oregon Cultural Trust in support of goals and funding priorities outlined in the Clackamas County Plan for Arts, Heritage and Humanities. This year marks the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition s 17th cycle of giving.
