A step is being made toward improving the mental health response of Huntsville police officers with a new program, the Co-Response Program.
Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council discussed the new program that would be a collaboration between the Huntsville Police Department, WellStone Behavioral Health and the City of Huntsville to help respond more effectively to mental health crisis situations.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Mental health issues are taking center stage in the Tennessee Valley.
Thursday night, Huntsville City Council approved a resolution to build a new crisis diversion center to help people who are often ignored and don’t know where to go.
Police Chief Mark McMurray said the new center is a partnership with Wellstone Mental Health Services which will help them respond during emergencies.

We heard from the group about their push for changes in policing.
Rosa Parks Day Committee members of Huntsville-Madison County along with State Rep. Anthony Daniels spoke out in downtown Huntsville. They want the police chief to renounce his support of William Darby following his murder conviction for a fatal shooting while answering a call.
The group made the same demand for Mayor Tommy Battle. They say he gave them a revised statement, saying he respects the jury’s decision and Darby’s right to appeal.
