A shock poll has shown support for West Australia s ruling Labor party has plunged following the departure of former premier Mark McGowan with the Liberals now in a winning position.
It was always ambitious to try and overhaul WA’s biggest union in one election and Team Fenn did well considering the incumbent’s resources. Chris Jenkins reports.
The Mark McGowan Labor government is basing its decision on its own Westport Taskforce, which examined the future of the port and associated land and transport questions.
The Westport process and the government decision assume that the volume of container traffic and per capita consumption of imported goods will increase nearly three-fold in just 50 years.
This is reckless stupidity.
If we let capitalism continue on its drive for endless growth we can be certain that all the thresholds for runaway climate change will have been crossed, triggering the collapse of the Earth’s life systems and human civilisation along with it.
Anglicare estimates that when JobKeeper and JobSeeker get wound back, the waiting list will double.
The state government has been feeling secure riding high on its management of COVID-19.
The existence of the Fremantle camp, along with similar camps in Perth and Mandurah in the south, blights its record. The prominent location of the Fremantle camp was acutely embarrassing in the lead up to a state election. Keeping homeless people dispersed out of sight and out of mind has guided the government’s response.
The various attempts by the government to distract our focus from the causes of the homelessness crisis were completely disgraceful and littered with lies. It insisted that there were sufficient crisis accommodation beds in the Fremantle area and claimed that the camp had been organised by Extinction Rebellion. Trying to sow panic by attributing almost every crime committed in the Fremantle area to the camp was an act of sheer desperation.
