A Roscrea-native US police officer played his part in Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony in Washington D.C.
Mark Kirwan, who has been a police officer in the city for 20 years, also works in Special Operations and was detailed with looking after George W. Bush and his wife Laura in the US capital yesterday.
It was a very different ceremony, with limited crowds due to the pandemic.
Speaking on Tipp Today earlier, Mark said he had interactions with a few former Presidents as part of his duties on the day.
“It was a very strange situation because you’d normally have a couple of hundred thousand people at it. It was down to just a couple of thousand due to security and Covid.”

The hospitality sector is once again at a standstill, but that hasn’t stopped the founders of Positive Carbon forging ahead with plans to ready their technology for hotels and restaurants when they reopen.
Aisling and Mark Kirwan set up the business in early 2020 to develop technology that would help to cut down on food waste in hospitality.

Almost 24 hours removed from the pro-Trump protests that took over Capitol Hill in Washington DC on Wednesday, Paul Brandus joined Kieran to give him the latest from the US.
Kieran was also joined by Washington DC officer Mark Kirwan, originally from Tipperary, who held nothing back in his criticism of Trump s behaviour, while also acknowledging how undermanned the police force was on Wednesday as the riot unfolded.
He also explained why the episode has made him miss home!
