It’s a notion that flies in the face of some widely-held assumptions as the Thumb continues to light up dark red on state and national maps charting high per-capita spread of the coronavirus.
Ignoring mitigation measures like wearing masks has been among the most mentioned reasons transmission of the virus may be particularly high in the region.
In a recent interview, Dr. Annette Mercatante, St. Clair County’s medical health officer, she’s heard “for months, if not longer, that as you go further into the Thumb, that you literally don’t see any mitigation strategy at all.” And in Lexington, where coastal locals are gearing up for another tourist season, longtime Steis’s Village Inn employee Renee Falter said she’s heard it gets worse “farther inland.”
