Midwestern growers claim their strawberries are top of the line
Many US berry consumers are searching for the bright red delights that are now either available or will soon be ready in many patches throughout the Midwest. The growers there boast that fruit grown in home gardens or in small commercial patches are sometimes superior to that brought in from California.
Mark Gingerich said the cool temperatures delayed the start of harvest at his Iowa City farm. “They’re a little bit behind where they might normally be, but they’re really liking the wet weather we’ve had,” Gingerich told pantagraph.com. “Usually first week of June is when things start going. It might be a little bit later this year.”
