First Quarter County building permits nearly double

Building permit activity continued to rise in the first quarter of 2021 throughout Chaffee County, and Buena Vista is no exception. “We are still seeing a lot of development in town. We still anticipate more construction based upon the work we are doing getting lots ready for building permits,” said Buena Vista planner Mark Doering. According to a report by the county building department, 127 permits for single family dwellings were issued between January and April this year countywide. That’s a substantial increase from the same period last year, when 68 SFD permits were issued. That increase is driven primarily by an uptick in activity in the southern end of the county. In the first quarter of 2020, 14 SFD permits were issued in Poncha Springs and seven in Salida. In 2021, 30 SFD permits were issued in Poncha Springs and 28 were issued in Salida.

Proposal would expand recreation area at historic Rodeo Grounds

Jim MacGrady, district manager for Triview Metropolitan District shared a proposal during the latest meeting of the Buena Vista trustees.  The proposal would expand the recreation area at the historic Rodeo Grounds by incorporating the land of a 375-acre ranch immediately south of the grounds Triview purchased last year for its water rights.  “In our mind, this is a really exciting project,” McGrady said. “We purchased the Chicago Springs Ranch, which is adjacent to the Rodeo Grounds on Dec. 30, 2020. One of the things that became very apparent as we were doing our due diligence is that we share a fence line between the Rodeo Grounds and the Chicago Springs Ranch. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for the two entities to work together on this project.”
