get across the board when it comes to republicans or democrats everyone is saying let s not do this. it is tempting, of course, because it s something you can do immediately to get rid of that individual if this is it is an element. not the thing that drives these shootings. but then at least when it comes to the media and for the public s right to know it would be tempting to do this and yet at the same time we then are eliminating a factor that matters when it comes to determining why these things happen, how it happened and like with nikolas cruz as an example. we probably would not have learned the extent of how the government and f.b.i. had failed, the extent of the history here without that larger conversation. the issue becomes what do we do as a society? if we say fame is the only thing that matters, any kind of fame. a man got a standing ovation the other day in illinois, mark dallas, a school resource officer who stopped a shaongt.
all of the entrances, cutting the number of entrances? the argument here is that there are too many doors? you know, it s horrible because i ve played this over and over in my head, you know, going through it. what would you do? because it s interesting that last week at dixon high school in illinois, an officer named mark dallas actually prevented a school shooting because he was an armed guard in the right place at the right time, but as the lieutenant governor said, you just can t have that. it s not practical. so do we want the schools to become, like, tsa airport type entrances and exits? i don t know that we can. i don t know that it s practical. but i do think, you know, getting back to behavioral threat assessment where you have not just teachers, but everybody kind of in the food chain around these children who can recognize some of these symptoms and according to the american psychological association, it may come out that this perpetrator actually did give
like ten feet away from us. reporter: school resource officer mark dallas, a 15-year veteran of the dixon police department and athletic director jared shaner also heard the shots from this office just down the hall. there were three or four loud shots, very rapid succession. without hesitation, mark kind of looked at me and said that was gunfire or that was gunshots, opened the door and immediately steps out of the office and turns this way. you could hear just that the shots came from down there. it was apparent that the shooter was right there kind of by our trophy case and the garbage can. mark, without hesitation, just immediately begins to run in this direction, giving verbal commands, telling the person to drop their weapon, to put their hands up. rorter: as officer dallas pursues milby out the door, shaner yells toward the seniors in the gym to run. the varsity quarterback was at the rehearsal. seeing that many people run
reporter: and 60, illinois, hometown of ronald reagan, matthew milby walking to school at 8:00 with a semi automatic rifle moving towards the gymnasium where seniors gathered for graduation rehearsal. as he walked the halls he opened fire. school resource officer mark dallas pulled his weapon and confronted the shooter. the suspect turned and ran, officer dallas gave chase, they exchanged gunfire. police say the suspect was struck at least one time that his injuries are not life-threatening. the only indication is the response to officer dallas was textbook perfect. i cannot be more proud of the police officers, the way you responded to the situation, saturating the school, we confronted the suspect head on. because of his heroic action countless lives were saved was we are indebted to him for his
service and bravery. reporter: police officers who arrived on scene said the school s response was by the book, students and staff barricaded doors to classrooms with desks, bookcases and other objects. exactly how they were taught during the training drill. the 19-year-old got the rifle from his mother about it in 2012. she is not sure how she got hold of the weapon but she takes full responsibility. she went on to say her son was bullied by classmates but she never anticipated he would react in this fashion. my kid is laying up in the hospital shot. thank god they didn t kill him. thank god he didn t kill anybody else. i m wondering in my mind, rather than him being so sad because of being outnumbered or feeling ostracized, we have been drawing our son closer. reporter: the praise of the school resource officer comes three month after the school
