Increase in raccoon sightings prompt Marion officials to issue safety tips

MARION – Sixteen raccoon-related calls logged since April 5 and two exposures to dogs and a single exposure to a person are prompting Marion officials to provide residents with wildlife safety tips and guidelines.
Police Chief Richard Nighelli, Animal Control Officer Susan Connor and the Marion Board of Health issued a press release regarding wildlife following the uptick in reports of raccoon sightings in recent weeks.
The release notes that Marion Police and Animal Control have received 16 calls regarding raccoons since April 5. The raccoons have not been reported to be overtly aggressive. However, several of the raccoons were determined to have posed a public safety risk and were humanely euthanized by responding officers.

MARION – A Marion man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty for mistreating a female pitbull he’s alleged to have kept caged for most of the day in unsanitary conditions, only letting it out to go to the bathroom.
Chief Richard Nighelli reported that the Marion Police Dept. arrested and charged Brandon R. Davis, 26, of Marion Thursday evening, Feb. 4, with cruelty to an animal, and possession of ammunition without an LTC/FID Card.
On Wednesday, Feb. 3, Marion Animal Control Officer Susan Connor received information regarding a pitbull-type dog that was allegedly being kept by Davis inside of a home on Mill Street, police said. The person was concerned for the wellbeing of the animal, which was reportedly being kept inside of a cage in the home and was only being let out of the cage a few times per day to go to the bathroom outside. The person also reported unsanitary conditions inside of the dog s cage and that the dog was emaciated.

MARION - Chief Richard Nighelli has announced the promotions of three members of the department.
Sgt. Jeffrey Habicht was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Officers Larry C. Savery and Sean Day were each promoted to the rank of sergeant. All three were appointed to their new ranks during the virtual Marion Board of Selectmen meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19. I d like to congratulate Lt. Habicht, Sgt. Savery and Sgt. Day on their promotions, Chief Nighelli said. Each brings several years of experience and valuable skills to their new positions and I am confident that they will continue to serve the Marion community well.
