The regiment was a highly decorated unit that overcame discrimination and showed fervent patriotism.
Victor Colon, 55, a 32-year Army veteran and native of Puerto Rico who has served in every major conflict since 1989, helped organize Saturday s ceremony.
Colon is a member of the Borinqueneers Motorcycle Club, which was established in 2005 to pay tribute to the members of the 65th Infantry Regiment.
The club is made up of members of law enforcement and first responders and provides ceremonial escorts.
( Members of the 65th Infantry Regiment) endured hardship and racism and they paved the way for me, Colon said.
Colon worked with a historical research team and had a reproduction of a Returned from Hell-Korea 1950-1953 patch made for the two veterans.
Tiny house, big impact: Arnette House s new project will help Marion County veterans Andy Fillmore
The Arnette House Tiny House has a small footprint but will make a big impact.
The 230-square-foot, fully outfitted and air conditioned tiny house is the most recent product of a youth vocational technical program at the emergency youth shelter, which offers counseling services and foster care group homes in Marion and nearby counties.
Arnette House recently donated the tiny house for use in a transitional housing program.
Jeffrey Askew, director of the Marion County Veterans Service Office, was contacted by Arnette House to accept the tiny house donation; he, in turn, enlisted several local veterans organizations including the Marion County Veterans Council (MCVC) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Veterans Village in Fort McCoy to handle the donation and set a plan to help homeless or veterans in need of transitional housing.
Julius was married to Vernita (Willoughby) Julius for 62 years and the couple have two adult children, Francine Julius-Edwards and Russell Julius; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Julius-Edwards said the family took COVID-19 precautions very seriously and she took all CDC-suggested guidelines to help protect her parents. There s no such thing as too careful, she said.
The family has not pinpointed when or where her father might have contracted the virus.
Julius-Edwards, who works with the office of Florida state Rep. Yvonne Hayes Hinson, said her father had a COVID-19 vaccination appointment for Feb. 20 but he had already contracted COVID-19 by Feb. 12.
