Painting and sipping at the art center

Painting the orange sky. Popping the bottle. MARION Brushes and Blanc. Artist Barbara Healy hosted on a “paint and sip” wine tasting and painting workshop with the Mary Celeste Whiskey and Wine Library as part of the second weekend of the Marion Art Center’s SouthCoast Spring Arts festivities on May 15. The event was penultimate in the 10-day festival, followed only by a virtual concert paying tribute to Buzzards Bay on May 16. “Normally for Art Week we would have had more events,” Marion Art Center Executive Director Jodi Stevens said. “But eight feels perfect.” At the paint and sip workshop, participants were aided by Healy and her partner Pam Clarkson in painting a copy of a landscape on display in front of the class.

Crafting three-dimensional art from wool

Goransson demonstrates how to separate the wool A little help never hurts Things are coming along MARION Wool, soap and elbow grease. That’s all it takes to make felt. And under the instruction of artist Kristina Goransson at her felt workshop on May 8 part of the Marion Art Center’s SouthCoast Spring Arts programming participants were able to turn that felt into a three-dimensional structure. Goransson showed a group of nine participants how to turn wool into felt, and how to turn that felt into a three-dimensional object. First, you separate the wool and spread it on a flat surface. Next, put a cut out piece of plastic bag on top of the first wool layer (that’s what separates the layers, allowing you to create three-dimensional shapes like bowls and vases), before adding another layer on top.
