The FIA Formula 2 Championship returns to action tomorrow following a spectacular 2020 season, which saw Mick Schumacher crowned Champion in a breath-taking closing round at the Bahrain International Circuit. The action will pick up where last season left off, as the 2021 field revisit 2020’s Championship-deciding venue to gear-up for an eight round and 24 race season which introduces a brand-new weekend format.
Beginning tomorrow, the official three-day pre-season test will give teams and drivers time to prepare ahead of the season opener which will see the grid return to the Bahrain International Circuit for the first three races of the 2021 campaign on 26–28 March.
Trident have announced that they will be retaining Marino Sato for the 2021 Formula 2 campaign, while they have also added Bent Viscaal to their line-up for the opening round of the season in Sakhir.
21-year-old Sato will enter his second full season of F2 with the Italian team, having impressed them with his progress during 2020. The Japanese driver claimed eighth place at Mugello and came close to the top-10 on multiple occasions.
Sato made his F2 debut in the final part of 2019, the same year that saw him cruise to the Euroformula Open title with nine wins, 11 podiums, six poles and five fastest laps. Sato also competed in the European Formula3 Championship and the Italian Formula 4 Championship, scoring one win.

Fernando Alonso has set the pace on the final day of Formula 1 action for 2020, having topped the timesheets at the Young Driver Test at Yas Marina.
The Spaniard was given special permission to enter the test, which was originally designated as a test specifically for Young Drivers, defined as those who have taken part in two Grands Prix or fewer. Renault sought the dispensation as Alonso has been out of Formula 1 as a race driver for two years.
Putting in 104 laps of the Yas Marina Circuit, Alonso did a best time of 1:36.333 in the 2020 Renault to set the pace ahead of a field made up of some very inexperienced names.

Honda have let the cat out of the bag, all but confirming that Yuki Tsunoda will be on the Formula 1 grid next season.
The Honda protégé finished third in this year’s Formula 2 championship, taking two race wins with Carlin.
It has been rumoured for several months now that he will be stepping up into Formula 1 next year, signing with Red Bull’s junior team, AlphaTauri.
But while initially those reports included speculation that it was in part to try to persuade Honda to remain in Formula 1, the Japanese manufacturer has since announced that it is quitting the sport at the end of next season.
