Starting Monday, and through Oct. 31, all Palm Beach residents with oceanfront properties must ensure their lights are undetectable to sea turtle hatchlings.
The “lights out” town ordinance during turtle nesting season aims to protect endangered sea turtles, which lay their eggs on local beaches. Artificial lighting confuses the hatchlings, causing them to veer off course from their intended destination of the Atlantic Ocean. The disorientation of sea turtle babies because of artificial lighting sources is a major cause of the worldwide decline of leatherback, loggerhead, Kemp s ridley and other sea turtles, town officials said.
