A NEW wave of merchant navy officers were sent off on their careers at a passing out ceremony at Southampton Guildhall. Warsash Maritime Academy’s 151 latest graduates received their certificates having completed a three-year training programme for navigation and engineer officer cadets. They newly-qualified officers will be embark on careers in the cruise, cargo, container, oil and gas sectors. The ceremony was filmed and streamed live via the academy’s website so cadets’ families, in Greece, Gibraltar and Nigeria as well as around the UK, could watch from around the world. Andrew Hair, the academy s director, said: “The cadets have every reason to be proud, not only of what they have achieved during the last three years, but also of the importance of the work they have been trained to do. Their skills and expertise, and those of other professional mariners like them, will sustain the world’s shipping trades and support the global economy. I wish them every succ
