James Monroe Courtney having lived a loving, generous, and full life passed away peacefully at his home in North Myrtle Beach, SC on January 7, 2021.
Jim was born 10/27/1951 in Salem, Ohio to the late Orlan J. and Annetta J. (McClintock) Courtney. In addition to his parents Jim was pre-deceased by his brother Jared, uncle Forrest and Thelma McClintock, Don and Muriel McClintock.
After the passing of his dad when Jim was only 4, Annetta, Jim and his brother Jared went to live with his beloved grandparents, Erle (‘Gint’) and Nellie McClintock in Lisbon, Ohio. ‘Gint’ would impart strong character values and words of wisdom to his grandsons. Jim’s favorite quote was, “Sometimes the hardest thing to do is the right thing to do.” Jim carried his grandfather’s advice and applied it throughout his life.

It was a sunny day in Kyiv, Ukraine when Oleksandr Popruzhenko, a 20-year-old senior lieutenant in the Ukrainian army, was training a group of 15 soldiers on the proper way to lob a grenade. Shortly into the training session, a de-pinned grenade fell short and rolled into a nearby trench. Without hesitating, Popruzhenko dove for the grenade, but before he could throw it, the grenade exploded in his hands.
