But that hasn’t stopped county leaders charging forward in talks with other local officials on another frontier for development: 26 Mile Road, or Marine City Highway.
It’s where County Board Chairman Jeff Bohm said they hope to use a big chunk of the county’s share of federal funds from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan roughly $31 million total to make property along the roadway more hospitable to future developers.
It would mean spending millions on new infrastructure lines for water and sewer access to have shovel-ready sites to promote. First, Bohm said they’re putting out a request for proposals to have the 12-mile corridor studied.

St. Clair County officials are looking at whether significant infrastructure improvements are needed along the Marine City Highway corridor in southern St. Clair County. County Administrator Karry Hepting says last week the County Board of Commissioners voted to look into what projects might be necessary. “The board has already begun meeting with those local municipal governments that could be effected, it’s been really well received,” said Hepting, adding that it could lead to more development in the area.
Marine City Highway runs east-west from County Line Road to King Road and borders four townships. West of the Macomb County line it is better known as 26 Mile Road.
