I’m beginning this week with some follow-ups on reader input from previous columns. First, some comments I received on my guest column by the late Bill McCollom. In that column, Bill described participating in one of the last hike-to-ski downhill races in the Northeast, which was held on New Hampshire’s Mt. Tecumseh in 1961. I heard from Peter Penndorf that he had been in that race as well. Bob Burley knew Bill McCollom as a “consummate gentleman and intrepid competitor.” Their careers overlapped both as coaches for the Killington Ski Club and as masters racers. Bob also paid a great tribute to Bill by saying, “He left every person, race and trail better for his presence.”

Greg Morrill I guess it was inevitable that one of my trivia questions would stir up a controversy. But I’ll get to that a little later in the column. Averell Harriman, a railroad magnate in the 1930s, saw the growing popularity of destination ski resorts in Europe and felt it was time for the United States to have one as well. Skiing was becoming more popular in the U.S., but skiing areas tended to be in rural towns with few luxury options. Harriman wanted to build a ski resort for the rich and famous that would be easily accessible via his railroad. After an exhaustive search, he settled on Sun Valley, Idaho. By the way, one of the sites that didn’t make the grade was Alta, Utah.

The leader of the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force visited SSM Health St. Mary s Hospital on Christmas Eve to help vaccinate staff for COVID-19. Dr. Alex Garza is the task force s incident commander as well as the Chief Community Health Officer for SSM Health. Garza said the event was an opportunity to meet and talk with frontline workers and hopefully spread a little hope at the end of a difficult year.
