Letters: Extending coronavirus restrictions means ruining livelihoods and losing lives every day

Demonstrators protest outside Downing Street against the delay in easing of lockdown restrictions Credit: Barcroft Media SIR – What is the Latin for “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory”? Somehow we need to get through to the Prime Minister that extending lockdown is a catastrophic decision. More than half of voters may be happy with another month of restrictions, but that is because more than half are not significantly affected. Pubs, restaurants and shops have all been able to operate to some degree, but other industries have been closed since March 2020. The major live-events sector, for example, is still almost entirely shut down, and lives are being ruined and lost daily. There are no generous automatic grants and no business rates holidays for them.

Letters: Vulnerable patients sent on a 30-mile trip to receive their vaccinations

Council Member, College of Medicine London SE1 SIR – I have received an email from the Ascension Community Vaccine Clinic in the city of Warren, Michigan, saying I have an appointment to receive my jab. This is a round trip of well over 7,000 miles. I hope they can arrange somewhere closer for the second dose. Tom Bliss   SIR – Professor Jonathan Van-Tam has said that we should stay at home after receiving the vaccine, and behave as though we have the virus. The logical conclusion of this approach is that everyone must remain isolated until we have all been vaccinated. Having to live so unnaturally for such a long time will result in a huge death toll, greater than what we have seen in the past year – but, of course, it will not be part of the official statistics.
