resort town built in the 1920s. it was one of the few places where black people could own property. blair evans and susan ma, the oose live here year round. a lot of people appreciated coming from idle wilds in one sense because you escape from the oppression of being black and if another sense you could be authentically black. reporter: they could swim, ride horses and be entertained. it was a reprieve from segregation and the horrors that came with being black in america. when the civil rights act of 1964 was signed things changed. integration did a lot to damage idlewild. black people desserted idlewild because then other places opened up and we could go any place. reporter: marilyn atkins built this cottage with her dad when she was 9 years old. here s my dad. reporter: they came every summer. passing the tradition to her daughter and grandson. idle w50id wild is a tremendous source of fries and anchors us
