Image zoom Tis the season for setting festive, Easter-friendly tablescapes, and there s no pattern that evokes the spirit of spring like gingham. Gingham is a classic check that, for me, is a sign of spring and freshness, says interior designer Mitchell Hill. For Easter, we would wear gingham-smocked outfits, but as an adult, I see it as a nostalgic reference that can liven up any garden party with a classic twist. Interior designer Marika Meyer of Marika Meyer Textiles agrees, noting that gingham is the ultimate chameleon pattern. This versatile check works in any scale and easily pairs with any pattern, she explains. In its smallest scale, it can read like a woven, adding a subtle layer of interest, like another texture. And in a large scale, it s bold and graphicâthe color choice can make it feel sweet or sophisticated.

Architect Jim Rill and interior designer Marika Meyer built this luxe closet for a client in Chevy Chase, out of a space that used to be an outdoor deck. Cabinetmaker Danish Builders designed the built-ins and double islands. “She treated it almost like a getaway,” says Rill of the homeowner. “We had to convince her not to do a refrigerator up there with wine in it.”

Interior designer Elizabeth Reich of Jenkins Baer Associates created this moody space for a couple in Baltimore, using their existing closet, plus a small room next door that lacked purpose. She incorporated a vintage ottoman, picture lighting, and an eggplant area rug for a cozy aesthetic.
