craft brewers. now we also have thousands upon thousands of people employed by marijuana businesses. and it s just it s really not going to be much different when we look back on it in the future. is the industry sustainable, robert, or is this just the novelty and eventually it s going to wear off? i think the industry is very solid. the fundamentals are there. because you have a product that millions of people want and there s the ability to create that product. the problem is that this industry literally hangs from a thread because if the federal government decided to stop its selective impotence and actually enforce the laws, then the entirety of the industry evaporates and that s a problem. so really, the true solution lies with the united states congress. because the united states congress must legalize marijuana, get the federal government out of the prohibition business, and take it off of schedule 1. marijuana is scheduled as the most serious type of drug under federal l
administration recently gave the banks a green light for how to do business with legal marijuana companies. but the banks say that guidance doesn t go far enough. this light is redder than ever. it actually moved us backwards in terms of banks being able to accommodate the marijuana businesses. reporter: here s why. first, recreational pot is legal in colorado and washington. medical marijuana in 20 states. and washington, d.c. but under federal law, marijuana is no different than hard core illegal drugs like heroin and ecstasy. second, those new rules from the obama administration say any bank doing business with a marijuana dispensary must prove the pot never makes it into the hands of children. it never trafficked never state s. not smoked on federal property and has absolutely no ties to the drug cartels, among other things. while we don t really care to be doing the government s work for them, the bottom line is, we can t comply with that. there are simply there are

to make it easier for banks to serve marijuana businesses. how is that working? all marijuana jokes aside, this is a business issue. when you have states like washington and colorado where recreational marijuana use is legalized, it s classified as a federal drug and against the law in a federal standpoint. another case where states are differing from federal law. as a result, these businesses are not able to get financial services from banks. they are having to use a lot of different measures that don t include the banks. what the obama administration did is said as long as the businesses are compliant with state law, they would not go after banks or credit unions who are using them. it s a fascinating issue and one that folks in colorado and washington are still hesitant about because a new administration could take a different approach.
