City leaders are looking at ways to crack down on speeders. They re taking a close look at adding speed cameras to the school zones. Mayor Steve Tumlin said for years he s been hearing complaints about drivers speeding through neighborhood streets. It s one of our biggest complaints, cut through neighborhoods, speed through my neighborhoods. We just don t have enough manpower to have police everywhere, said Mayor Tumlin.

Marietta City Schools’ upper elementary and early schooling curriculum will be adapting to meet the needs of students as the district consolidates from six academic buildings to four in the next school year. The district will have the opportunity to reach students who are excelling and struggling with STEM, Talented and Gifted, summer school options and a change of curriculum. Tim Fleming, current assistant principal at Marietta High School and future director of curriculum and technology at MCS, said the biggest changes to the district’s curriculum will be in math and social studies.

Marietta students, educators surprised with mayor s awards

MARIETTA — Mayor Steve Tumlin made stops at all 12 of the city’s public schools Monday to present awards to students and educators. The Mayor’s “Blue Devil” Awards and Mayor’s “Be Somebody” Awards are presented to one student and one teacher or staff member from each school. For the past three years, for every school in the Marietta school district, the mayor has awarded a “Be Somebody” Award to a school staff member who shows the values of making a difference for their students and the community, and a “Blue Devil” Award to a student who shows a positive attitude, exceptional character and great work ethic. School leaders, with input from teachers and staff, help select the winners.

jpatterson@mariettatimes.com Photo by Janelle Paterson Teaching staff at all six academic buildings of Marietta City Schools were encouraged to demonstrate solidarity Wednesday by leaving their buildings at the end of the instruction day instead of continuing to work. Teachers at Washington Elementary School stepped out of the building together to demonstrate unity Wednesday. Tense times are calling on individuals who work together to exercise emotional discipline this year and seek avenues for peaceful protest and difficult, but necessary, dialogue. Marietta City Schools are no exception. The city school district’s teacher union organized a demonstration Wednesday to show unity amidst lengthy contract negotiations which have resulted in mediation more than once this year.
