There was a great sense of pride throughout Co Longford on Easter Sunday as people watched another Longford person take centre stage in the Easter commemoration for the second year in a row
Ballinalee native Capt Marie Carrigy says she was proud and honoured to have been chosen to read the Proclamation during last Sundays annual Easter Commemoration.
The Longford woman says she d expressed an interest in the duty after being impressed with other soldiers from Longford and Athlone who d carried it out in the last two years.
Capt Darren Reilly from Ballinamuck read the proclamation last year making it the second year in a row that a Longford person has taken centre stage in the ceremony.
Socially distanced 1916 commemorations have taken place in Dublin simultaneously at the GPO and at Ãras an Uachtaráin.
The Taoiseach Michael Martin and the Minister for Defence Simon Coveney took part in a small ceremony in the inner-courtyard of the GPO while President Michael D Higgins performed a wreath-laying ceremony at the Ãras.
In a departure from the tradition of previous years, there were no large crowds or stands of dignitaries assembled in OâConnell Street where the tricolour was lowered to half mast at noon.
In the GPOâs open air inner courtyard, Fr P.J Somers chaplain to the Defence Forces, led Mr Martin, Mr Coveney and the Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu in prayer for the âmen, women and children who died during the 1916 Risingâ.
