Fifty teams of women aviators will be taking off from Lakeland Linder International Airport on Tuesday morning for the 2,500-mile cross-country Air Race Classic. It is the only race exclusively for women in the entire country.
Two three-woman squads from Liberty University’s Liberty Belles flight team flew Cessna Skyhawk 172SPs out of Lynchburg, Va., Friday morning to join the field of 53 teams arriving in Lakeland, Fla., the starting point of the 45th Air Race Classic.
Launching on June 21 from Lakeland, Florida (KLAL), the racers will fly across 12 states and will have four days to best their own airplane’s performance.
