Recap and update

Sandy Black visits Carthage

May 14, 2021 1 of 2 Sandy Black was joined by the three scholarship winners Alex Cook (2019), Brooke Hildebrand (2020) and Cara Mullens (2021). Photo provided CARTHAGE - Several years ago, Sandy Black opened a new chapter in her book of life. She had raised five children and retired from a job she held for 35 years. It was time to start setting new goals. She created a bucket list which included writing a book by the time she turned 80! Her first book was published on her 80th birthday and has been followed by two more. She already knows the subjects matter of her next trilogy. Black likes to mix the history of old structures (giving them a voice in her stories and a cat to converse with), humor, and a few secrets in the books she writes!

Upcoming events in Carthage

May 6, 2021 CARTHAGE – May will be a busy month for Carthage so mark your calendars. May 11 the Library Guild will be sponsoring a free presentation by author Sandy Black (“Oh Those Old One Room School Houses and the Children They Taught”) at the Marick Event Center (300 East Street Carthage, IN). A meet and greet, presentation, and book signing with Black will begin at 6:30 p.m. Ms. Black visited last year and her presentation was highly recommended and enjoyed by all. Since getting involved in our community last year, Black regularly donates a portion of her book sales to the FOC Hidden Gem Scholarship. Presently one $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Ripley Township graduating senior. It is the hope of those involved to move to two scholarships in the near future.

Let’s make it a holiday to remember with new traditions like shopping local! The last article reminded shoppers of Larry’s Saw Shop and Marie’s Variety Shop. Over the past nine months we have all watched small businesses struggle to survive. Today I will be highlighting two more small businesses in Carthage that are struggling to not only survive, but prosper in these uncertain times. If you live near Carthage, you might be familiar with two of our newest businesses, The Marick Event Center/Wedding Venue located at 300 3rd Street (formerly the Fletcher Methodist Church) and Todd’s Great Outdoors located at 2 S. Main Street. Rick and Mary Shannon, owners of the MEC (Marick Event Center) and Mindi Grant, owner of Todd’s Great Outdoors all moved to the area around five years ago.
