Whether you're new to Portland or haven't left your house in a while, fall is a great time to refamiliarize yourself with the multitude of spaces that make up Portland's effervescent art ecology. Since the city has a longstanding history of being home to artists, makers, and all types of creatives, this list could get vast fast. Instead, here's a partial overview highlighting some upcoming shows that we think look particularly neat. And we’ll explain.
Aperture Foundation, in collaboration with the photography program at Parsons School of Design at The New School, is pleased to present an artist talk with Maria Antelman.
Maria Antelman is a visual artist whose work explores the relationship between technology and the human condition. Inspired by new and old technologies, Antelman addresses our society’s dependence on technology, and the way humans adapt to meet the needs of the digital landscape. Speaking about her work, Antelman states: “As we become extensions of the technologies we use, our tools change us and change the way we respond to the world. These subtle, yet deep transformations, routed in the complicated systems that machines weave around us, are my main concerns.” In this artist talk, Antelman will speak about her practice and her work featured in the online exhibition
Courtney Bierman interviews Bemis Center curator Rachel Adams
A free exhibition at the Bemis Center joins three artists’ work to explore intimacy as it relates to the body, relationships and space. “Intimate Actions” features solo exhibitions by Maria Antelman, Joey Fauerso and Paul Mpagi Sepuya . The exhibition will also serve as a jumping off point for a series of community conversations called “Public Assembly” which started this month and will continue through March and April. What is it about these three exhibitions that you think work well together?
Something that I hadn t done yet since coming to Bemis was to curate three solo shows.
