LETTERS: COVID control, Lane elimination in Hermosa and Redondo elections: Week of January 21

Local management of COVID-19 risks Just under a year ago, with the advancement of warm spring weather, larger party crowds and the reluctance of people to keep their distance in many places other than the beach, LA County closed our beaches. That caused people to congregate in even more close spaces. Local officials blatantly sat by and blamed the county. We are in a challenging moment of our health crisis, yet people still feel the need to find opportunities to congregate close. The local beach cities need to work in concert with each other to take small temporary actions (limit weekend parking, pier Strand access, etc.), in order to allow our beaches to remain open.

Redondo's off-year elections draw crowded fields for council, schools

Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand will face three challengers in the March 2 city election. The election will also see Redondo Beach residents voting to fill three council seats, the city attorney’s position and three vacant seats on the Redondo Beach Unified School District Board of Education. Unlike neighboring cities, Redondo did not align its upcoming election date with the general elections. Mayor Brand, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, will face Chris Voisey, a chief technology officer and community volunteer; Michael Ian Sachs, a retired Chevron employee who ran for mayor in 2017; and Shayne Hartman, a proposal analyst from Northrop Grumman.
