Tourism is on the rise along Alabama’s Gulf coast. That means lots of visitors heading to the state’s beaches, restaurants, and attractions. But, while the number of tourists is going up, the number of tourism industry workers isn’t. Many staffers in Alabama’s visitor industry left during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a lot of them haven’t come back. Mobile is turning to technology to link workers with hospitality industry jobs.

The hotel, like others in Alabama, is experiencing a rebound in visitors. With that comes the pressure to add more employees. Jim Pappas is pulling extra duty as general manager at the Hampton Inn in Daphne by helping clean up the hotel rooms and make sure a hot breakfast is served to visitors. He’s also monitoring the phones, waiting for job applicants to call him back. Staffed typically with 35 workers, the hotel off Interstate 10 next to the city’s popular Gator Boardwalk, needs about seven more full-time workers to help manage a forthcoming busy summer season.

A year ago, 290 vehicles were towed from downtown Mobile, an increase of 227 from the 2019 Carnival. This year: Not one vehicle was removed requiring owners to fork over $150 to retrieve it from a special Mardi Gras impound. In a typical Mardi Gras season, officers will respond to close to 500 complaints, and issue well over 400 tickets. During Fat Tuesday, the Mobile police department logged nine complaints, and no tickets were issued.
