While some museums are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are currently open as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture. Margel Hinder’s fluid abstractions in metal can be found installed in public spaces throughout Australia. But if her work is instantly recognisable, Hinder’s name – and her career as one of the country’s most prolific and original sculptors of the 20th century – is less well known. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is hosting the first major survey of her work (30 January–2 May), which extends from early woodcarvings made in the 1930s to kinetic works in metal from the 1950s, and later to her public sculptures and fountains, several of which are represented in the exhibition by life-size reconstructions.
