A1A International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday

A1A across St Johns and Flagler counties designated All-American Road

Recognized for its surrounding natural beauty and history, one of St. Johns County s most-loved roads has a new title. A1A, the official Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway section spanning St. Johns and Flagler counties, has been designated an All-American Road by the Federal Highway Administration. The designation is part of the National Scenic Byways program, which recognizes roads for their special qualities and helps preserve and enhance them, according to the administration.  The nonprofit Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway sought the designation.  The 72-mile stretch of road is part of State Road A1A, which runs along Florida s East Coast. State Road A1A in St. Johns County is used by many travelers who are looking for a scenic drive along the Atlantic Ocean instead of using the interstate.

A1A, All-American Road, Navigates Between Quaint and Crass

A storied road even before it was known as A1A, the oceanshore stretch from St. Johns through Flagler County is now an All-American Road, only the second such designation of a road in Florida. (© FlaglerLive) State Road A1A, or at least the region surrounding it even before it took on that relatively recent name, has always had a primordial place in Florida. Originally published in 1939, the WPA guide to Florida devotes its very first tour, out of 22 in the book, to the 102 miles between Jacksonville Beach and Daytona Beach, on what were then State Roads 78 and 140, the previous designations for A1A. The guide described the roads as “hard surfaced roadbed except for occasional short stretches of shell road; watch for cattle and sand drifts.”

Volunteer of the Year honored by Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway The Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, Inc. are pleased to announce their 2020 Volunteer of the Year, Captain Adam Morley.  Currently serving as vice president of the organization, Morley was recognized for his service to the Friends of A1A and presented with the annual volunteer service award, at the Coastal Policy Center in Marineland, Florida last month. Presenting the award, Friends of A1A President Marge Rooyakkers commended Morley, co-owner of Genung’s Fish Camp in Crescent Beach and co-chair of the organization’s International Coastal Cleanup efforts each year, for his volunteerism as well as his out-of-the-box thinking, leading to the creation of projects like the “A1A Scenic Byway Litter Removal” pilot program, set to launch in spring of 2021.
