Our job is to educate, organize, mobilize people. Or years from now is a long time. Weve got other things to worry about today. [applause] you talk about universal healthcare and its something that so many of us believe in. What do you think is the straightest path to get that at this point . The problem lies in a corrupt Campaign Finance system. And the first thing weve got to do is overturn citizens united. [applause] and in my view, moved to public funding of elections. What we also have got to do, and this worries me very much , its directly related to healthcare or the environment or anything else. You have to pay a lot of attention and fight back against voter suppression. There are cowardly republican governors all over this country who are afraid of free, open and democratic elections and theyre trying to make it harder for young people, for old people, people of color to participate in the political process so we got to resist that and move toward a nation in which everybody ,
You also heard, as i mentioned when i wrote my mem wires, that we saw the impeach earl warren signs and i always wondered who this earl warren was. Later on of course i would figure it out, that it was the chief justice of the United States and he was in trouble in part because of brown. I guess there is no way i could say did you ever think that you would be sitting in the building where earl warren worked. Not only didnt i think of that, i didnt think that i would ever see the building where he worked. You know, my grandfather was an interesting man, he of course, dominated our lives and he felt that as these rights were vindicated that we had an obligation to measure up to use them. I will give you a separate example. When the Savanna Public Library finally desegregated and we were allowed to go to the main librar
Thank you. Next speaker. Im sarah sims and im a parent to two children enrolled in miraloma elementary and im here to implore to you raise our teachers salaries. The district consists that teachers will see an 18. 5 increase for salaris and benefits over the next three years and also acknowledge this means 8. 5 , but the department of labor states that the Consumer Price index that measures prices in the greater sf area has grown 3 which means that the wage proposed by the district wouldnt keep up with the district. 8. 5 is just 2. 8 per year, leaving teachers 2. 2 poorer than when they started. Teachers have not had a pay scale increase in five years and the market rate for onebedroom apartment in San Francisco requires 62,000 salary. Per sfusds own published pay scale a teacher will earn that in his or her tenth year, but only ensuring that we are enrolled in continuing education and earning 60 units. Parttime at San Francisco State University will cost 1800 and at that rate it could
