CSPAN2 Book Discussion On Genesis March 22, 2014

Thank you for having me. I spent, oh, months at the Truman Library about five or six years ago. I think the last time i stayed in kansas city was in 2000 for the Carnahan Ashcroft election. [laughter] one of the strangest events in the history of american politics. [laughter] glad to be back here again. I know that this is talking about truman and israel is like talking about the last time that the Kansas City Royals won the world series. [laughter] and i have to warn you that i may disappoint you, because im going to go around this in a kind of circuitous way. Well get to the truman at the end, but were going to start much further back, about 70 years before. Let me say first something about how i came to write this book, because i kept having to ask myself as i was doing it why i was writing it. [laughter] i wanted to write a book about the arabisraeli conflict. I was concerned that i hadnt been a reporter and done the daily work, but i also worried that in writing about that conflic

And celebritys are also sharing this, living off of tips and anyone can. We invite and encourage the stories that we have heard today. Thank you so much. [applause]. Cspan margaret macmillan, what has it meant to you in your life that youre the great granddaughter of David Lloyd George . Guest well, its been nice in a way, i guess, to know that i have a famous ancestor. I never met him. On the other hand, it actually sort of inhibited me from doing this book because i thought i dont want to write a book that people will say oh, shes just doing it because of her great grandfather and its sort of an act of filial piety. So, ive had some mixed ambivalent feelings about it really. Cspan what role has it played in your life . Guest not much in canada and north america but more in england where people still know about him. I mean i used to go to england when i was young and my grandmother was his daughter. My great aunt, who i was very fond of, was another daughter and so i did hear a lot ab

Property. And it went to court and went to lord mansfield, famous jurist, who ruled that slavery so odious, that was the term that he used, that it cannot be tolerated on english soil. Crucially, it could be tolerated in the colonies. But thats another story. [laughter] but not on english soil. And the United States, the founders of the country were almost all slave owners. And they could see the handwriting on the wall. If the colonies remained under british rule, probably these laws would apply here, and theyd lose their property. That was surely a significant element of the revolution. And it runs right to the present. I mean, right to this moment the civil war is still being fought. Simply take a look at the electoral maps. Say the map of the election in 2012, red states and blue states. Its almost identical to the civil war. Its the confederacy, can which now call themselves republicans shifted names [laughter] and the rest which was the north. A large part of the motivation behin

Attacks. This week, the daily reported death toll from covid in america was almost as high. On multidays. Vaccines are coming soon, but so is a dark and tragic winter. How can we reverse the terrible trends the u. S. Is seeing and can we do it before christmas . Harvards michael mina has a plan. Finally, the president and his allies continue to spread lies about widespread election fraud. At the highest level, it was a rigged election. Think its all innocuous . Think again. One great political lie helped bring about the downfall of german democracy in the 1930s. The great historian Margaret Macmillan will explain. But first, heres my take. Its much too soon to be thinking about a posttrump america. Donald trump remains the most popular figure among republicans and he will continue to play a huge role in american politics in the years to come. But it is not too soon to begin thinking about a posttrump democracy. An american political system that learns from the challenges and threats it

CSPAN2 Book Discussion On The War That Ended Peace January 19, 2014

Years ago today out of curiosity november 4, 1913 the United States was preparing to muster 500,000 troops and year up for war against a major power. President wilson had just given an ultimatum to that nations head of state but we did not go to war. At least not then. That major power was on the side of the atlantic. It was mexico. And the general was the great menace of that moment. So i found this on the front page where else, the new york times. The next 17 pages of that days paper there was not a single mention of europe. Whether there was any menace in europe whereas our two featured authors today have masterfully chronicled very currently the seeds of a rural world war would that were already germinating. The second balkan war had just concluded to set the stage of that in europe is building a favre rotter and more deadly confrontation. To examine all these routes is my pleasure to welcome margaret at his lead up to the conflict in her new the war that ended peace as she was des
