Saint Mary s College, in California, has removed a statue by a Nazi-approved sculptor from the courtyard of its art museum and placed in storage,
The statue of a boy and falcon is not inherently pro-Nazi and was created in 1953. But the sculptor, Fritz von Graevenitz, was approved by the Nazis and worked for them during the 1930s and 1940s.
Margaret Kasimatis, interim executive vice president, said, We have removed it temporarily to give us an opportunity to learn more, adding, We intend to use this moment as an opportunity to hold community conversations about the artist and the historical and political context in which he lived, as well as broader ethical questions about public art, including those of context, intent, and impact.

A statue by a German sculptor celebrated by the Nazi Party during World War II has been removed from display at St. Mary’s College in Moraga after three students circulated a petition demanding its ouster.
The metal statue of a boy and a falcon by sculptor Fritz von Graevenitz, who also sculpted Nazi-era works in the 1930s and 1940s, was taken down from the courtyard of the campus art museum and placed in storage at the order of college administrators.

Feb. 27 A statue by a German sculptor celebrated by the Nazi party during World War II has been removed from display at St. Mary’s College in Moraga after three students circulated a petition demanding its ouster.
The metal statue of a boy and a falcon by sculptor Fritz von Graevenitz, who also sculpted Nazi-era works in the 1930s and 1940s, was taken down from the courtyard of the campus art museum and placed in storage at the order of college administrators.
“We have removed it temporarily to give us an opportunity to learn more,” said college interim executive vice president Margaret Kasimatis, in a letter on Friday to the campus community.

St. Mary’s College in Moraga has temporarily removed a statue by a Nazi-era artist after students created and promoted a petition calling for its removal.
The German artist who made the statue, Fritz von Graevenitz, was celebrated among Nazi officials. Born in 1892, he created many pieces, including a 20-foot-wide bronze eagle and swastika statue and busts of Hitler. He died in 1959.
The statue at St. Mary’s is titled “Falcon Boy” and does not have any Nazi symbols. It depicts an unclothed boy looking at a falcon he is holding in his left hand. The statue is located within the courtyard of the college’s Museum of Art.
