Herb Franks , who founded two banks, a prominent law firm and a Jewish congregation all while becoming an influential Democrat in the Republican stronghold McHenry County, has died.
After 50 years, Temple Chai in Long Grove ceased operations on June 30, and about half its membership subsequently has joined Temple Beth-El in Northbrook. The merged congregation will mark a new beginning this Rosh Hashanah.
