But as we near the close of 2021, we're running a few profiles from the past five years that made such a deep impression on us, we think they warrant a second read. Joe Copeland's profile first ran on Aug. 12, 2018. My interview with the World War II veteran and longtime Fayetteville Public Library volunteer was incredibly moving. I am still brought to tears when I think about Mr. Copeland describing his hardscrabble childhood, the support he provided for his family from such a young age and his devastation when he was not able to finish high school. His recall of events that happened nearly a century before was astonishing. Our country and our community lost an amazing man when Mr. Copeland passed away in February of 2020, at the age of 99.
