It was while he was heading home to New Mills from the family farm up on the hill last Thursday morning when Danny McDaid’s mobile phone rang. He pulled in to take the call from his brother. Frankie, who’s based in Dublin. It wasn’t good news. Jerry Kiernan had died in his sleep the night before. He was 67.
Danny had been talking to Paddy Marley, the Clonliffe Harriers AC President, the night before. The death of the hugely talented Hugo Duggan in December had knocked the pair for six and the passing of the Milford great dominated much of their conversation. Irish running legend, Eamonn Coghlan, is appealing to men, women and children all over County Longford to sign up to do a mile for humanitarian aid agency, GOAL, this Christmas - and support the world’s most vulnerable communities at the same time.
The 3-time Olympian and former world 5,000 metre champion announced that he and his family will be out of the traps to do a virtual GOAL Mile on Christmas Day – and he wants as many people in Longford to do likewise for an important cause.

By any measure, 2020 has been an ordinary year. So many of the sporting milestones which punctuate our calendar either went uncelebrated or, when they could proceed, were “celebrated” in eerie silence.
One Australian running tradition was maintained, however. The calendar year ended with a resounding performance at 10,000 metres, for which we must give grateful thanks to Patrick Tiernan.
For the first time in over 50 years, the annual Zatopek 10,000 metres races did not take place. Happily, they will instead be raced in January, 2021. But Tiernan found a December 10,000 race to run, at “The Track Meet”, in San Juan Capistrano, and was able to enjoy his own private celebration after setting an Australian record 27:22.55.
