DEADLINE DAY: Wanderers complete loan deal for Charlton Athletic playmaker WANDERERS have completed an audacious loan deal to sign playmaker Marcus Maddison on loan from Charlton Athletic. The talented playmaker is looking to revive his career after a tough spell at The Valley where he ended up out of favour under manager Lee Bowyer. Maddison came through the ranks at Newcastle United and was then plucked from non-league football at Gateshead by Peterborough, where he became one of the lower league’s hottest properties, scoring 62 goals in 249 games at London Road. With a penchant for spectacular goals, he became a fans’ favourite in six years with the Posh but left for a six-month loan spell at Hull City in January 2020, after which he signed for Charlton as a free agent.

AS: After a hot start, Charlton look to have stumbled slightly in recent weeks - what’s been the story? RC: Until about the start of November, Charlton were absolutely flying. They won six straight games, they didn’t concede in five of them and Ben Amos went over nine hours without conceding. Then there was about a a three-week period throughout November without any League One football, and things haven’t really been as fluid since. A couple of really bad defensive errors cost them against Burton, and the performance was off when fans came back for the first time against MK Dons.
