NEWARK Marcia Downes, executive director of The Works, will end 20 years operating the Ohio center for history, art and technology when she retires in November.
Downes became director of what was called Knowledgeworks in 2001, helping founder Howard LeFevre develop a museum and educational center explaining local history and industry to new generations.
It started in 1996 as The Institute of Industrial Technology in the former Sheidler Machine Works on the corner of First and Sheidler streets. LeFevre, given the tribute Man of the Century at Newark s bicentennial celebration in 2002, bought the building to save it from the wrecking ball. LeFevre died in 2008 at the age of 101.

NEWARK – Elizabeth Weiser, PhD, may be the very definition of smart and talented. She’s now a professor at OSU-Newark, teaching writing, rhetoric and museology (the science of organizing, arranging and managing museums). But that hardly scratches the surface.
“I travel the world studying a topic I find endlessly fascinating,” she said. “I teach people who are just discovering who they are, what they think, and what they can do, and I help them achieve their dreams.”
“And I love that our writing program has allowed me to develop contacts with so many impressive Newark leaders,” she continued. “It’s an honor to be able to contribute to their work in making our town a better place for us all.”
