government get out of the healthcare business after seven years of obamacare which is what many conservatives want. doug s doug looks at that and he is live in washington. from the very first day since its passage in march of 2010, republicans have to fight tooth and nail to repeal obamacare, numerous votes, promises from mitt romney back in 2012 and again at 26 to invite virtually the entire g.o.p. field, but all of that hue and cry has given way to a difficult truth of one party elder admitted last week. i should not have caught it repeal and replace me, that s not going to happen. basically they are going to fix the flaws and put a more conservative box around it. in other words, what was once a taboo in republican orthodoxy, government health care is here to stay in part, how else is it possible to cover 11 million people as they were before the

maybe the future is, gosh, this is tougher than we thought, we are going tweak it and repackage it. president obama said, if you want to call it something else, call it something else, just keep people covered. that s what john boehner said. what the republicans are going to have to do is put a different frame around it. keep the main program intact. whatever road they go down here, this is a very interesting question of priorities for trump and the republican congress. think back to 2009 and 2010. obama with the democratic majority in the house and the senate. to get through a real overhaul of the health care system took him basically from early 09 through to march of 2010. that s when they finally passed it. very contentious. you are talking a commitment of more than a year there to get something through. you would need to arrive at some kind of plan, go through the entire process. it will dominate politics. it will dominate washington. it will drown out what you are trying to do.

a democratic control of congress that was much bigger than republicans have now. you had for the first year until teddy kennedy passed away in massachusetts, you had 60 votes. you had a filibuster-proof majority in the senate, in addition to democratic control in the house. and a very popular president. and it still took until march of 2010, so another word it would be like passing something not this march, but a year from this march, taking 14, 15 months to pass it because even though you have this big democratic support, there was still a lot of items to work through and there was a lot of fighting going on. and then when it was finally passed, it was passed without a single republican vote, so if obamacare is going to be a model, the passing of obamacare, as opposed to the repealing and replacing of it, that shows you just how hard it can be even if you have a tremendous majority in the house and the senate, bigger than donald trump in the
