talking messaging, we can improve the messaging, that s the internal la meant of every president. if only the message were better, you always hear that. what anthony is describing and what the president seemed to be hinting in the clip from this morning is a shift in tone. he had a couple major shots in the spotlight. the inauguration, a lot of people looked at the tone saying it was on the darker side, the negative side. if there s a problem with messaging, to the point he s willing to talk about that, it raises the question, the term pivot with donald trump is so overused. at 70, he s not going to change. but, the challenge he may be seeing is he s still in campaign mode. he got a victory by the slimmest possible margin. tens of thousands of votes in three states, otherwise he loses. look at the approval rating now, it looks like the day before the election. it was just enough, just enough
obama excuse me, president trump is blaming president obama for the leak when it was his own press secretary that went to the staff and said let me see your phones, i want to look for leaks. i think there s, again, a broader issue here. and what trump is speaking to is where for him, at least to this point, the campaign hasn t stopped yet. to donald trump the campaign hasn t stopped yet, it hasn t stopped to his opponent either. if you look at some of the most outspoken people in the media, a lot of them are, let s face it, obama vets. they re being very outspoken, challenging him, questioning him, criticizing him. it is like the campaign didn t stop. that s a decision that donald trump apparently made after the election and his opponents have responded in kind. going into the speech tonight,
it had to be walked back. you can disagree with the idea trump wants to be a huge superpower everywhere or pull back and let other countries have their way in the world. i think the overwhelming evidence is trump wants an america that pulls back and allows the saudis to demonstrate their sphere of influence and the russians to do theirs. that is more dangerous. the united states providing the security should be the model. he said time and time again, the united states shouldn t be in that role. nato should fend for itself, perhaps the japanese should get nuclear arms. final thoughts, anthony. when you put $54 billion up on the table, that goes totally against what michael is saying. all the president said and i have listened very, very carefully is he wants our friends and allies to make a bigger commitment to their own security financially. he doesn t want the american citizens in michigan and
the question is, and we are going to take a break, sit back and say the policies are going to do great things for the country. why continue to make statements that aren t true? that s what doesn t make sense to us. i think that statement is true and you think it isn t. we can debate it. luckily anthony is here longer. we are going to have a chance to. the president made a surprising statement yesterday. nobody knew that health care could be so complicated. quite a few people did know. the question is, is it too complicated to fix? just like the marines did. at one point, i did change to a different company with car insurance, and i was not happy with the customer service. we have switched back over and we feel like we re back home now. the process through usaa is so effortless, that you feel like you re a part of the family. i love that i can pass the membership to my children, and that they can be protected. we re the williams family, and we re usaa members for life. call usaa
maybe the future is, gosh, this is tougher than we thought, we are going tweak it and repackage it. president obama said, if you want to call it something else, call it something else, just keep people covered. that s what john boehner said. what the republicans are going to have to do is put a different frame around it. keep the main program intact. whatever road they go down here, this is a very interesting question of priorities for trump and the republican congress. think back to 2009 and 2010. obama with the democratic majority in the house and the senate. to get through a real overhaul of the health care system took him basically from early 09 through to march of 2010. that s when they finally passed it. very contentious. you are talking a commitment of more than a year there to get something through. you would need to arrive at some kind of plan, go through the entire process. it will dominate politics. it will dominate washington. it will drown out what you are trying to do.
