lawyers had asked for. that is just one of two major developments today in one of two election subversion cases against donald trump. the other of course in the state of georgia, trump s former chief of staff mark meadows is on the stand today. he was there for three hours so far in the hearing to move his case to federal court, his actions after the 2020 election under the microscope in that georgia indictment. and in the spotlight during questions under oath on the stand today. justice correspondent jessica schneider is here. let s begin with that federal case, march 4, 2024, trump had wanted it more than two years after that, april 2026. how did the judge decide here? yeah, this was two months later than the special counsel wanted, but as you said, more than 2w0 two years earlier thant trump s team wanted. trump s attorney really pushed back on this, he kind of set the stage for a possible appeal. he said look, with this accelerated time line just about
paper. and he acknowledged that arraignments in this case are now scheduled in the state court on september 6th. and so the clock begins ticking. evan perez is in washington tonight. evan, you watched this doj hearing very closely today when the judge set the trial date for march 4, 2024. what else did we learn? reporter: we learned there was a lot of discovery that has already been turned over from the prosecution to the defense. and that s one of the reasons why john lauro, the former president s lawyer, stood up in court and gave a really strenuous and impassioned plea for the judge to just give them more time. of course, they re asking for two years to prepare for this trial. the judge was not buying any of that. she said, one of the things that he was raising obviously was the fact that the former president is running for office, he s got three other indictments. let me just read you a part of what she said. she said, setting a trial date does not depend and should not defend
ruling. the judge has, i would say, complete discretion, not just broad discretion, but complete discretion in managing her calendar and setting reasonable trial dates, which is precisely what judge chutkan did today. i ll tell you, joy, i was in the courtroom. the defense counsel john lauro did not do himself any favors. he was a bomb thrower. it sounded like he was making arguments to donald trump s base, not to the judge, when the judge implored him, give me a reasonable alternative proposal. he said, and i think i can quote him because i was furiously taking notes. he said, we can t do it in anything less than the time we have proposed. and she had had about enough, and she said, well, then, you just bought yourself a march 4, 2024 trial date. and just to stay with you for a moment, because you know, the judge goes on to say that, you know, number one, trump likely knows most of the witnesses, a lot of them worked for him.
challenging this, they want to move to federal court. march 4, 2024, that seemed like a longshot, october 23rd seemed like a longshot, as well. with the judge granting this date, we ll see. brian: governor kemp said no way this will get tried before the election. we ll see what jack smith s cases do. ainsley: they did sever the cases, chestboro guy will be tried october 23rd, he was co-defendant, but they did sever them. donald trump is saying that is too early for me. we don t want octobers, they are trying to do it after the election. steve: all over the place thchl is all over the place, cover of the new york post. former president of the united states, first time ever a president has had a mugshot and no words, and the president took
