historic statement. the race was very, very complicated. barack obama wanted to make a race speech as early as the iowa caucuses and his campaign said you know what, let s not do that. i think everybody can see that you re black. one of the ironies i think of my dear brother barack obama, now president obama s victory, was that we have a relative moratorium on serious discussions of race. that s partly because his strategy was to evade issues of race. but in march 2008, explosive videos of obama s pastor, jeremiah wright, hit the airwaves. no, not god bless america. god dam america. the reaction was damming. reverend wright had officiated at obama s wedding and baptized his children. their connection might have tagged obama as an angry black man, an image his campaign worked hard to avoid. the association threatened to
foxnews.com actually looked at this data at companies that have 100, 99 actually or fewer employees, small businesses just to see how many jobs were lost and in what is called the great recession. so as you said, it was roughly, over 3 million jobs actually because you had 220,000 plus businesses which were lost. if you go back to march of 07, this was a study that looking at march 2008 to 2010, if you go back to march of 2007, it is actually far worse, 273,316 small businesses. part of the problem here that you add 5.1 million businesses small businesses in 2008. by 2010, the most recent year for which data exists you only had 4.9 million businesses. then there s the gallup poll which would coincide with this dramatic loss in jobs and businesses which among business owners only 35% approve the obama administration s handling of business issues. 59% disapprove.
lost hundreds of thousands of small businesses. just take a look from the period of march 2008 through march 2010, the number of small businesses went down substantially, over 200,000 people rather 200,000 small businesses vanished, taking along over 3 million jobs. ali: this could explain why the president s comments on small businesses businesses and who is responsible for building those has gained so much traction ask could explain why mitt romney is doing so well in the most recent gallup poll that people believe they d be better for the economy given 200,000 small businesses have gone away. let s listen to john boehner. now the president is off campaigning trying to tell everyone who will listen that he didn t really mean what he said, that he didn t really mean you
as you can imagine, people who are liberals and score low liked hillary clinton since she came upon the scene in 1992. one, once we interviewed another group of people in march, 2008, in the height of her contest with bar obama, we see a complete shift. and when we reinterviewed and she s obama s secretary of state, it reverts back to normal. what implications do you think this has for someone on twitter when i was talking about your research was saying that you were blaming the president for this state of affairs. that somehow, the president was mucking everything up in terms of polarization. every time he talked about an issue, he would racialize that.
an event that enraged the catholic church was interrupted by an abortion protester. it was a speech by health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius at georgetown university. let s listen. having spent my entire life in public service i spent my entire life in public service [ cheers and applause ] cheers of support there from the graduates. the church had blasted georgetown for inviting sebelius not because of the obama administration s position on abortion, but church leaders instead were angry over sebelius support of a law requiring employers, even religious institutions, to provide birth control coverage. the most hyped stock offering of the year got off kind of to a bumpy start. shares of facebook jumped more than 10% in the first minutes of trading, but then they started to go the other way. at one point the stock was hovering around an initial point of $38 before rising again. alison kosik has been watching all this at the nasdaq market site. alison
