In Port Orange election, mail voting was the real winner

News-Journal readers Sixteen percent of eligible voters cast ballots Tuesday in the Port Orange city election for the District 1 seat left unexpectedly open after the resignation of Marilyn Ford. Jonathan Foley won with 54% of the vote, defeating Marcey Kinney.   It was a pleasant mid-season flex for local political players. Although the race was nonpartisan, Foley had local Republican support while many area Democrats backed Kinney.  The 16 percent turnout may have seemed light, but it s excellent by off-year, special election standards. What was particularly notable was the continued wide use of mail-in ballots by voters of both parties. Fully 88 percent of the votes cast were mailed into the elections office.

Port Orange fires Fire Chief Ken Fustin after restaurant disturbance

Two weeks after an altercation at a local restaurant with Volusia County officials, Port Orange Fire Chief Ken Fustin has been fired. “Mr. Fustin’s actions were inexcusable and did not meet the city’s standard expectation of employee behavior, especially from our executive staff, Interim City Manager Jamie Miller said in a news release issued late Thursday.  This type of conduct will not be tolerated as per our city policies and core values and has been dealt with quickly. The  release said Fustin s conduct violated multiple city policies, and that he was relieved of his duties effective immediately. Fustin was placed on paid leave April 7 as the city investigated words exchanged with Volusia County s Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo  a former Port Orange fire chief himself during an April 1 meeting.
