we don t want to fall back anymore. make this nation strong. we want to go forward. i want to see american made. american made, something these michigan voters want to see a whole lot more of. it s a promise that helped tipped michigan in president donald trump s favor. my economic agenda can be summed up with three very beautiful words, jobs, jobs, jobs. we re bringing our jobs back. reporter: it wasn t just trump s promise of more jobs it s his promise for what he calls fair trade. this is a manufacturing state, and all of the states in the rustbelt, these people are hurting. michigan s unemployment rate just hit 5%, the lowest in 15 years, but that s a rose sier picture than the reality some here told us they re living. michigan has lost nearly 300,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000. it s kind of like this quiet depression that s going on publicly where people, they re

here it is. companies that are looking for just low-cost labor they ve already left. we re already at a disadvantage right now. and the trade agreement i m proposing would actually strengthen our ability to force other markets open. strengthen our position compared to where we are right now. and will workers in your states buy that? that s the fundamental point, isn t it senator? it s not about buying the rhetoric. it s about living with the consequences of what we do here. and i m very concerned that if we eventually see an agreement like tpp come to fruition that we are going to see significant job loss in a manufacturing state like wisconsin where a significant sector of our economy still makes things. provisions like buy america
original charter colonies and it s mostly a manufacturing state. it earned more than $13 billion in defense contracts in 2011. the economy and population growth has slowed to a crawl. one of the biggest issues is income disparity. there s a larger income near new york city. connecticut has the largest gap between the top 1% of earners and the other 99%. the top incomes average more than $2.1 million, four times the average income of the rest of the state. and there is a cultural divide as well. here s one way to sum it up connecticut has long been split almost down the middle when it
it s partly from federal investment. we learned from the auto rescue, it s got to be bipartisan. it s got to be a partnership when ever possible between the federal government and local communities and businesses. i see the president looking that way and going that way, partly enforcing trade rules, partly investing in clean energy in ohio. we are a manufacturing state, of course. it means medical device and so many other kinds of advanced manufacturing. we are moving in that direction well. molly, having covered the campaign, what are you expecting to see start be put in the pipeline in terms of a legislative agenda. once the fiscal budget conversation is ended. it s interesting to hear someone like senator brown talking about this. i think you have, among democrats, a sense they did win the policy argument in this
