The Commuter: Road signs a bridge to the past
Commuter-types, like myself, travel through history every day.
It is written on signs everywhere.
We all know that Vacaville was named after a pioneering family, Vallejo after a Mexican general and Benicia after his wife, and when Thomas Dickson donated 10 acres to the railroad, the history of Dixon was slapped on the behind.
Fairfield, of course, is named after a sports packaging company in Des Moines, Iowa.
Google is so awesome.
But those are the easy history lessons, as are the signposts on major thoroughfares, such as Travis Boulevard and Manuel Campos Parkway, named for a notable Fairfield councilman and mayor.
Fairfield waives bid process, approves 3 equipment purchases
FAIRFIELD Fairfield is getting a new rear-load garbage truck, a replacement chipper truck and a replacement 10-wheel dump truck.
The City Council on Tuesday suspended competitive bidding for each purchase. The action was taken as part of the consent agenda without comment.
The NorCal Kenworth garbage truck costs $182,357; the NorCal Kenworth chipper truck costs $130,966; and the NorCal Kenworth dump truck costs $186,809.
In other action, the City Council:
• Approved a $77,556 settlement to employee Corina Rangel. The action was taken in closed session and announced in the public session. The closed session item was listed as anticipated litigation.
