Economists greatly appreciate, but professor deatons decadeslong work on welfare, wellbeing and health have been major contributions to the economic literature and this decade as the rest of us finally became attuned to the problem of income inequality here and around the world, these contributions have guided important Public Policy prescriptions and debate. His 2013 paper with ann case, rising morbidity and mortality in midlife among white americans in the 21st century, resonates strongly in todays political environment. I think of myself as someone who has just gotten on with what i have been working on and im delighted that so many people are interested in this. I have been thinking about inequality i think since i was a graduate student in the 1960s. One of the things that i appreciate about the current environment is just the extent to which
